Immigrant and Refugee Commission co-chair recognized for advancing justice for women

Congratulations to Immigrant and Refugee Commission Co-chair Riddhi Mukhopadhyay who will be receiving the City of Seattle Women’s Commission (SWC) 2017 Jeanette Williams Award.

Riddhi is being recognized for her work as Legal Director of the Sexual Violence Legal Services, at the YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish where she specializes in representing and assisting survivors and victims of sexual violence facing challenges in accessing justice based on mental illness, developmental disabilities, limited English proficiency, and immigration status. She provides bilingual legal services in Spanish, and also speaks Bengali and Hindi.

Riddhi is an attorney and longtime activist for immigrant and refugee rights. Born in Kolkata, India, Riddhi received her law degree from Seattle University School of Law. Since 2001, she has volunteered as an advocate for immigrant domestic and sexual violence survivors and is a former Berkeley Law Foundation legal fellow and attorney at the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. She has organized and advocated with different immigrant communities, including domestic workers, detained individuals, and immigrants with developmental disabilities.

Since 2003, the SWC Jeanette Williams Award has recognized notable individuals, organizations, and businesses in the Greater Seattle Community that serve as champions advancing equity for women and girls.

Jeanette Williams served on the Seattle City Council from 1969 to 1989 and was a tireless advocate for women’s issues. She also served as a founding member of the Seattle Women’s Commission, and SWC commemorates her legacy through celebrating community members who are continuing to work towards gender equity in Seattle.

All are invited to join the SWC for a special award ceremony and community celebration to honor Riddhi and other community members who have demonstrated significant leadership and service in advancing the cause of women in Seattle.

The event is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!
