On Friday, January 4, two significant roads connecting to State Route (SR) 99 have closed: the Northbound SR 99 on-ramp at South Royal Brougham Way and the Southbound SR 99 off-ramp at South Atlantic Street.
On January 11, 2019, the SR 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct bridge closes permanently. Then tunnel-related construction will begin and last for over three weeks. Crews will work around the clock to move SR 99 off the viaduct and into the new, two-mile SR 99 tunnel beneath downtown Seattle. During what we are dubbing “the Realign99 closure,” both the viaduct and new tunnel will be closed. This will be the longest highway closure in Seattle’s history.
Why is so much work needed? Currently, the stretches of SR 99 immediately north and south of the tunnel are temporary roads, detours built years ago to keep traffic moving during tunnel construction. On January 11, crews will start removing those detours and completing the ramps to align SR 99 with the new tunnel. The work includes unburying tunnel on-and-off ramps completed in 2014 at the tunnel’s south end. This video explains more in detail:
Then after the tunnel opens, it will take up to two additional weeks to complete the new northbound off-ramp to Alaskan Way and South Dearborn Street. This is the ramp structure that today stands in the middle of the SR 99 detour just south of the viaduct:
The Realign99 closure will be a very challenging time for everyone traveling to, from, or through Seattle. From past experience, we know closing SR 99 makes other highways and Seattle streets more congested. We will need everyone’s help to avoid gridlock. All levels of local government are calling on commuters, employers, and travelers to help ensure that first responders and emergency vehicles can still move quickly through Seattle by making new commute plans. This document can help you do this. You should also consider changing your transportation habits and making sure you stay well informed once the closure begins.
Government officials also warn that traffic is likely to be severely impacted over the next five years, as private and public construction projects will continue to change how we move and deliver goods. For example, the Washington State Convention Center, waterfront, Key Arena, and Rainier Tower 2 construction projects are all located in important downtown Seattle areas. This new era of tough traffic is being called the “Seattle Squeeze.”
